Periodontal diseases are diseases that are caused by bacterial plaque. This bacterial plaque produces toxins and enzymes that destroy the attachment of the gum to the tooth, and then the supporting bone. If the bacterial plaque is not removed, it can calcify, then called calculus. Daily oral hygiene with effective brushing, and flossing prevents periodontal disease.

The disease is classified into gingivitis (gum infection), and periodontitis (bone and gum infection.)

X-rays and a careful oral examination by your dentist are necessary to diagnose periodontal disease, which is usually not painful and can occur without you knowing.

Periodontal disease is aggravated by smoking and more difficult to cure in smokers. Other factors that can affect the periodontal tissues are stress, medication, pregnancy, medical conditions such as diabetes and several other factors.

It has also been reported that periodontal disease can affect your heart and the health of your unborn baby.
